I have so many anger feels about My Little Pony right now
But most of my followers don’t watch the show and don’t wanna hear about it while the rest of you will probably fucking crucify me because that’s what happens to people with legitimate fucking grievances in this fandom apparently because these cartoon ponies can do no wrong. So I’m slapping it under Read More and preparing for angry asks and unfollows like a bitch.
Probably not enough people care for those things to happen.
Also, for the people who care, trigger warning! Ableist shit.I’d just like to say that I, too, work with disabled/handicapped kids on a regular basis. I’ve worked with kids who have Down Syndrome, ADD/ADHD, basic learning deficiencies, Asperger’s, etc. Heck, I am a disabled/handicapped/special-ed kid, and I let them know as much. I was diagnosed with an LD in math as well as ADD when I was 8 years old. You think I didn’t hear the jokes/insults too? Of course mean kids are going to call you ‘stupid’ and ‘retarded’ when you struggle with something that comes oh-so-easily to them. The teachers can be horribly cruel, and un-understanding too, believe me, I know.
But I still use the word ‘derp’. I use it, because when I hear it I don’t think of Clarissa, the girl I tutor with Down’s Syndrome. I don’t think of Jacob, my student with Asperger’s. When I think of them, I think of all awesome things they’ve been able to accomplish and all of the things they’re good at. When I think of ‘derp’, I think of Homer Simpson hitting his head and saying ‘doh!’ or something similar to that.
If you choose to associate this with these kinds of kids, I frankly think that’s your own misfortune. I have never actually heard anyone make the sound ‘derp’, so I kind of feel that it’s offensive in and of itself that you find it so. Sure, maybe some people are trying to make a reference to people with mental handicaps when they say ‘derp’, but I would think someone who worked with them and saw how capable they were would know better than to let that offend them, simply because they’d know how inaccurate and off-base it is so it wouldn’t matter.
